Greenstone Bombetto- Volta Fiore Denver

Jason Sirotin:
Hello, and welcome to the Greenstone Podcast. I'm Jason Sirotin. And today I'm joined by Gary Walker, Mr. Genetics, and our good friend, Chris from Volta Fiore. And we're going to be talking about Chris's strain called Bombetto. Chris, what makes Bombetto the bomb?

Chris:
So, it's a great one. I mean really it's just a very sophisticated plant with some really complex, multilayered tones and flavors. It is the Silly Putty crossed with a pollen that we created. And the pollen is a Lavender crossed with Silly Putty cross with Grease Ball.

Jason Sirotin:
Wow.

Chris:
Yeah. And again, it's like I was saying earlier about trying to find something new. We wanted to work with a pollen that was something that was just in its own universe. So we didn't just want to go with a Lavender, we wanted to cross that into Volta couple of times and then use that. But it was a mutant Lavender too. I had in, I think 2000 and maybe 2007 or something, I had a buddy bring me down about 30 Lavender seeds from Wisconsin. That there was an old school grower in Wisconsin growing Eustoma Lavender for a few years up there. And my buddy and his friends were really digging on it. So he knew I was starting to get into all this stuff and he decided he was going to bring it to me in Colorado.

Chris:
And I had worked with those Lavender seeds for many years. I had maybe 10 different females of them. I was running for a while, had them at a dispensary I was working at in Colorado, gifted them to another dispensary. So they made their rounds in Colorado. But the ones that made the rounds in Colorado were the more commercial friendly ones that had the bigger bud and could deal more, easier to grow. The one that I chose to use for the breeding was the mutant. Because again, we want to try to bring something new. Everybody's got great pot, everybody's got elite stuff. But we want to try to bring something different. So then the person walks away with a new memory, a new experience. So the Bombetto has that Lavender floweriness, sweetness where the Bombetto you get hints of rose and blueberry and a sweetness. I mean, when you're walking past it and a garden, it smells like a blueberry patch. Literally smells exactly like a blueberry patch. When it's dried and in the bag and cured, it takes on a whole new thing. Mainly it's turning into body odor and cat piss. And it's-

Jason Sirotin:
Sexy.

Chris:
Yeah. And it's unbelievable how that changes. And I always say to people, you never know what you got until it's dried and in the bag, because in your garden it could smell like blueberry. And in the bag it smells like cat piss. So it changes a lot and-

Jason Sirotin:
How's it taste?

Chris:
So that's why you always got to grow things out. It tastes great and it's complex, it's rich, it's not a one note a string, I love it. And it's one of those that keeps you coming back. It's the jar that gets depleted first, it's the one that you just don't want two or three hits. You want to just keep smoking at six, seven, eight heads but I love it. That's one of the ones we're really excited about. And we named it after a friend of ours who entered a couple of our strains into the 2017 Golden Tarp Awards. She's a really good friend to us and she was trying to convince us to enter into these Cannabis Cups, "You guys got such great strains. You got to start at [inaudible 00:04:15] the Cannabis Cups." And we're just these low-key Kermit type guys saying, "Yeah, sure."

Chris:
So she just took it upon herself to enter our Grease Ball in our Silly Putty into the 2017 Golden Tarp Awards in Garberville, California. And they broke it down into four categories, floral, earth, fruity and fuel. And Grease Ball one, the floral category and Silly Putty won the fuel category.

Jason Sirotin:
No, that's amazing. Congrats.

Chris:
Yeah. Thanks. So floral and fuel. And so we were so excited about that. We decided to name our next grade strain after her Bombetto. We always gave her the nickname Bombetto because we just think she's the bomb. And so it's named after our friend.

Jason Sirotin:
Yeah. Let me ask you a question. You were talking earlier, it sounded like there's so many phases to creating these strains. How long did it take you to create Bombetto?

Chris:
Well, you got the female Silly Putty, you pollinate it and you grow it out. It's not just the first round and I always try to tell people this, somehow the flowers change over time. You have to grow things out four or five times to really make those decisions on what you're going to keep and what you're not going to keep. And I like to do that also going back to the effects. Weed is so mysterious, it's so hard to put your finger on, it's for scientists even got it in the lab and they can't even tell us what the hell is going on with it. I mean, they're telling us some of these strains are stronger than Tango. Tango tested like 20%. We know that's not true.

Chris:
So you have to do experiments yourself. And so over time, trying the strain and saying, "Okay, is it a keeper in the garden? Does it shape well into a nice bush? Is it easy to trim? Is it easy to clone?" And then how do I like the high of it? So the Bombetto, a lot of this stuff with Volta Fiore it's just been luck, it's been destiny. But the Bombetto I mean, we just found a winner. We thought we had a winner the first time, we grew it out over and over again. And each time you grow it, those first four or five harvests, it gets better and better. And you're saying, "I don't think this strain can get any better." And the next time you grow it, it does. It gets bigger, it gets smellier. The Terp profiles really just explode. So you might be pulling the plug on something after the first round and not giving it a fair chance.

Jason Sirotin:
And so we talking two years of work to get one strain really to where you want it?

Chris:
Well, I mean the Bombetto first it was creating the Silly Putty from the Grease Ball. And then it was creating that male. That male took a while because it was the Silly Putty cross with the Grease Ball and then had to find a male there and then cross that with that mutant Lavender female. That's probably took a couple years to get the Bombetto. And I did a big breeding round. My fiance and I a few years ago where we took that male pollen, that Lavender Silly Putty Grease Ball and we hit our Grease Ball Silly Putty flower pot and our Porcupine was another strain that we're working with. And so we hit them all with that pollen and we're still pheno-hunting through these seeds. We have some people who are testing them right now and we still got lots of great stuff to find. The Bombetto is just one of these. We expect to find a bunch more and it's going to take time just to be able to go through just the seeds we have. But yeah, it's worth it. It's definitely worth it.

Jason Sirotin:
Chris, thank you so much for taking the time today to talk to us about Bombetto. Love the story, I love everything about it, I can't wait to try it. Thank you for being a great partner.
