Episode 01 Banana Punch

Jason Sirotin:

Hello and welcome to the Greenstone Podcast. I'm Jason Sirotin, joined by director and partner Gary Walker. Gary, how are you?

Gary Walker:

I'm doing very well. Thank you very much for having me on your podcast.

Jason Sirotin:

Well, it's your podcast, bro. It's your first one. Welcome to your first podcast, and today is really special. We have a secret special guest, who will be on the show from time to time, and he goes by the name of Mr. Genetics. Mr. Genetics, how are you?

Mr. Genetics:

I'm good. Thank you for having me. I'm glad I can be a part of this.

Jason Sirotin:

That's really cool, dude. We really appreciate it. So what we want to do is kind of go through some strains and kind of understand, you know, how they grow, what they give back to us, how they make us feel, how they smell. I really just want to know the things that you think are cool about the plant because you're the genetics expert and you know about all this stuff, and I think the audience could really benefit from understanding it from a source that's just not Leafly, where anybody can put anything.

Mr. Genetics:

Yeah.

Jason Sirotin:

So the first one is Banana Punch. It's a hybrid and I see that it's a banana OG and a purple punch F2. Did I get that?

Mr. Genetics:

Yeah, that's made by a company called Symbiotic Genetics and it's probably one of the most underrated strains right now, simply because the general public can still get access to the seeds pretty easily, as we speak. So although it's slightly uncommon, it's one of the only strains that's still left to be able to get.

Jason Sirotin:

Wow. Well what makes it so popular? Or what do you think is going to make it so popular?

Mr. Genetics:

First of all, I really liked the company Symbiotic Genetics. Everything I've worked with them has turned out amazing. And it's a California company, so not very many people in Colorado are familiar with California companies or California genetics. And that's kind of one of the voids I've identified in Colorado genetics' network. And Banana Paunch was part of the purple punch wave that Symbiotic started, which

was gifted to them by 808 Genetics, and purple punch was kind of a really nice unique strain that Symbiotic took in and bred with it and released to the public.

Jason Sirotin:

That's cool. And so like flavor profile, does it taste like banana?

Mr. Genetics:

It will depend on what kind of fino you get. So even though they can sell seeds to whoever, depending on what you [inaudible 00:02:54], you're going to get a lot of different options. So the Banana Punch I work with is very fruity and has a great [inaudible 00:03:03] gas type smell to it. And it's going to be real tall and lanky with nice long leaves, and fades to a rainbow color at the end of flower.

Jason Sirotin:

Wow, that sounds beautiful. And what kind of high does it give you?

Mr. Genetics:

I think it's a solid hybrid, but it's going to lean more towards sativa effects, more like creative and energy effects as opposed to a relaxation and sleep.

Jason Sirotin:

Gotcha. How do I know if I've got good Banana Punch versus bad Banana Punch?

Mr. Genetics:

I guess that would come to somewhat deciding on which fino to keep and which not to keep. I'm assuming that you're talking about ones that are growing-

Jason Sirotin:

Yeah.

Mr. Genetics:

So it really depends on which one you select. So as a fino hunter, you know you have a winner if you're checking off the following categories: Is it a big time producer? Does it have big nodes and is it going to be a big yielder? That's one column. The next column is terpenes. Does it smell good? Does it have a lot of terpenes? Does it smell like nothing? Do I get a big yielder, But it doesn't have any terpenes?

Mr. Genetics:

So smell and terpene flavor is the other category, and the other category is frost and [inaudible 00:04:27] saturation level. So you're looking for something that's going to produce a lot and has big buds, that also has terpenes and nice flavorful values, and this high potency with high [inaudible 00:04:38] saturation.

Mr. Genetics:

So that's why it's hard to get a good cut because you need all three categories to be outstanding.

Jason Sirotin:

Wow. And so is that like basically the definition of fino hunting?

Mr. Genetics:

Like if I had to put it in a nutshell, that would pretty much describe it.

Jason Sirotin:

Okay, gotcha. That's really cool. And so, are there going to be very many people in Colorado carrying it or is it just like going to be a select few batch of growers?

Mr. Genetics:

I think that we're still in the void. The major problem I'd describe of genetics overall in Colorado is that they are only focusing on genetics that are coming from just a couple sources in Colorado. So the problem with the legal market is that we're not looking at California strains and Oregon strains and all these other wonderful strains that are being bred and produced. No one really is looking at all those options. Unfortunately, a lot of people are just going to depots or [inaudible 00:05:43] Colorado or some [inaudible 00:05:45] facility, and the result is that the majority of the market is growing and selling and buying the same exact strains.

Jason Sirotin:

Gotcha. So the diversity is low in the marketplace?

Mr. Genetics:

Yeah. Yeah. So I think anyone who's looking at these strain and willing to import them is going to have an advantage on the large percentage of the market who cares about what strain they buy.

Jason Sirotin:

Yeah. Which, do you think that's growing and do you think it'll continue to grow, or is it kind of staying the same with people who care about that?

Mr. Genetics:

Oh, I think the demand is growing for sure. The demand is absolutely growing for new strains, for strains that are from out of state. These strains are getting popular on social media and various platforms, and people know these strains and even go to Colorado dispensaries and ask for them and they're not there. So really, it's not a matter of is it growing, it's a matter of who's going to start taking advantage of this demand by supplying these certain strains and, you know, to the first Victor goes the spoils.

Jason Sirotin:

Yeah. Absolutely. Well thank you for the education on Banana Punch. We really appreciate it.

Mr. Genetics:

For sure.

Jason Sirotin:

And Gary, thank you as always. And, you know, these set of podcasts are going to go down in history of the first of many where we really get into what you and I have been talking about for years, which is the lack of education in the community, and that there's so much to learn and we can really build a real business and an empire around doing things the right way and focusing on the things that matter. And I think that's where you and Mr. Genetics have made a real connection.

Jason Sirotin:

And I know that myself and the other listeners are really excited to see the Banana Punch, the Mac, the Miyazaki OG, the Sunday driver and the waiting game in the next few months. So thank you for all your hard work.

Gary Walker:

Absolutely.

Mr. Genetics:

Oh yeah, man.
